The national public broadcaster has appointed the executive counsel at Nine Entertainment as its new general counsel.
Kiah Officer has been appointed as the new general counsel at ABC, bringing over two decades of “outstanding” industry experience as a specialist media lawyer working across commercial free-to-air television, digital platforms, radio, newspapers, and magazines.
She has worked at Nine Entertainment for more than 19 years, including eight as a senior corporate counsel and over seven as executive counsel. She has also served as editorial legal advisor at News Ltd, and as a technology, media, and communications lawyer at Blake Dawson (now Ashurst).
She is also a member of the Ethics Committee for the Law Society of NSW, and has been “closely involved” in policy work impacting the media industry and public interest journalism, the ABC noted in a statement.
Officer’s start date is yet to be confirmed.
Speaking about her new role, Officer said: “The ABC plays an important role in the Australian media landscape and I welcome the opportunity to assist in presenting its unique voice to the Australian community.
And ABC managing director Hugh Marks said: “Kiah Officer brings exceptionally strong credentials and experience to this key role at the ABC and in the media industry.”
“It will be great to have her in the dedicated and talented ABC legal team,” he said.
