Commercial barrister Vic’s latest Supreme Court judge
A leading barrister, who once worked as an associate to former Supreme Court Justice David Harper AM, has been appointed to the bench.
Victorian barrister Kevin Lyons QC has joined to the Supreme Court bench, replacing Justice Peter Vickery who will retire at the end of May.
Commenting on the judicial appointment, Victorian Attorney General Martin Pakula said Mr Lyons has had a distinguished career as a barrister working in contract, negligence, equity and class actions law.
“I congratulate Mr Lyons on his appointment,” the A-G said.
“I also thank Justice Vickery for his decade of service to the Supreme Court.”
Mr Lyons’ practice at the Victorian bar specialised in contract, negligence, equity and class actions, consumer and commercial criminal law, as well as in building and insurance, and wills and estates.
According to a statement released by the Attorney-General, Mr Lyons was admitted to legal practice in 1990 after he obtained degrees in law and arts from the University of Melbourne. He worked for a period of time as a solicitor, then as a senior associate, at Galbally & O’Bryan.
Mr Lyons later worked as an associate in the Victorian Supreme Court for Justice David Harper, who was recently named deputy chair of the state’s new Post Sentence Authority.
“Mr Lyons has been a member of the Ethics Committee of the Victorian Bar since 2009, and was previously a member of the board of the Victoria Law Foundation, and a member of the Legal Practice Committee of the Legal Services Board,” the statement said.
