Attorney-General Michael Daley announced the appointment of Magistrate Michael Antrum as Deputy Chief Magistrate of the Local Court, stating how this is “an expanded role which recognises his extensive experience and leadership”.

Magistrate Antrum was initially appointed to the Local Court in 2011, where he has presided over cases in various metropolitan and regional courts across the state, including those in Wagga Wagga, Queanbeyan, Gosford, and the Downing Centre in Sydney.

He most recently served as deputy president of the forensic division at the Mental Health Review Tribunal for two years.

Magistrate Antrum pursued a bachelor of arts (communications) at UTS in 1988, followed by the completion of a bachelor of laws and a graduate diploma at the same university in 1993. He subsequently obtained a graduate diploma in military law from the Australian National University in 2010.

Prior to serving as a magistrate, the NSW government outlined how Magistrate Antrum held the position of a solicitor at RJ Nolan & Co in Dubbo, Sweeney Waterford Lawyers in Narrabri, and North & Badgery in Sydney.

The A-G also detailed how Magistrate Antrum has more than three decades of experience working in the legal profession, “including as a mediator, arbitrator, litigation lawyer, general counsel, and military lawyer”.

Magistrate Antrum is scheduled to assume his new position as Deputy Chief Magistrate on 28 October.

Speaking about the appointment, A-G Daley detailed how it is a testament to Magistrate Antrum’s leadership skills and drive to help the community.

“He has already been a leader in the Local Court, as a member of its education committee and the orientation team for new magistrates, in addition to his leadership role at the Mental Health Review Tribunal.

“This appointment to Deputy Chief Magistrate recognises Magistrate Antrum’s outstanding contribution to the law and to the community more generally.

“I congratulate Magistrate Antrum on his well-deserved appointment,” Daley said.
