Last week, the A-G’s Department announced the appointment of Alexandra Colquhoun, Gregory Shoebridge and Benjamin Zipser as judges for Division 2 of the FCFCOA.

Colquhoun and Shoebridge have been appointed to serve in the Sydney registry, whereas Zipser has been assigned to sit in the Parramatta registry.

All three judges will commence in their new roles on 16 September 2024.

The A-G’s Department indicated that these appointments were made after “an open call for expression of interest across Australia”. The department also noted that the trio of judges “were considered by an advisory panel comprised of eminent individuals”.

Colquhoun completed her bachelor of laws at the University of Sydney in 1994 and earned a master of laws (honours) from the University of Technology Sydney. She was admitted to practice before the NSW Supreme Court in the same year.

Shoebridge graduated from Queensland University of Technology in 1994 with dual degrees: bachelor of laws and bachelor of business (accountancy). He furthered his legal education by obtaining a master of law at the same institution. Shoebridge was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1996 and was formally called to the Bar in 2008.

Zipser obtained his bachelor of commerce and bachelor of laws degrees from the University of NSW in 1992. He also completed a bachelor of civil law at the University of Oxford. Zipser was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of NSW in 1992 and was subsequently called to the Bar in 1999.

A-G Dreyfus said: “On behalf of the Australian government, I congratulate Ms Colquhoun, Mr Shoebridge and Mr Zipser on their appointments and thank them for their willingness to serve the people of Australia as judges of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 2).”
