The Australian government has made a series of appointments to the established Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) as well as to the newly created Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).

The federal government has appointed 19 new members to the AAT, with their appointments set to take effect on 30 September.

Each appointee is scheduled to transition to the ART upon its commencement on 14 October and serve the remainder of their terms there. This follows the announcement in late 2022 regarding the abolition of the AAT.

The new members to join the AAT are John Boultbee AM, Sevda Clark, Bernadette Day, Thomas Ellison, Jonathan Hanton, Sophie Jones, Ms Deborah Keenan, Suzanne Leal, Louise McBride, Louise Prychidczuk, Andrew Rozdilsky, Emily Rutherford, Imogen Selley, Fiona Sneath, Claire Stokes, Sarah Thrift, Andrea Treble, Shyla Vohra, and Magdalena Wysocka.

Additionally, the Australian government has appointed 15 new members to the ART, including one non-judicial deputy president, six senior members, and eight general members.

Peter Britten-Jones has been appointed as the non-judicial deputy president, while Mark Harrowell, Jane Lye, Virginia Ryan, Peta Spender, Robert Titterton OAM, and James Walsh were appointed as senior members of the ART.

The following have been appointed as general members of the ART: Christian Carney, Felicity Eylward, Helen Grutzner, Roderick McRae, Gerard Sammon, Rebecca Smith, Bruce Wells and Danae Younger.

The federal government has outlined that each person appointed was deemed suitable for their relative position by using an “independent assessment panel through a transparent and merit-based process”. This process adhered to the “Guidelines for appointments to the AAT and the transitional provisions legislated in the Administrative Review Tribunal (Consequential and Transitional Provisions No. 1) Act 2024”.
