The Honourable Chris Kourakis, Chief Justice of South Australia, last week named Taanya Claire Lewis, Lisa Jane Dunlop, and David Billington as the state’s newest senior counsel.

The news follows the naming of 25 new silks in Victoria, as reported by Lawyers Weekly in early August.

The appointments of the three new silks were made, the Courts Administration Authority of South Australia noted in a statement, after wide consultation with the judicial officers of the state, the senior law officers of the state, and the legal profession.

Senior counsel, the statement went on, hold important leadership positions in the legal profession, and criteria for selection include legal learning, experience and skill in advocacy, integrity, availability to prospective clients and independence.

Lewis, who practises almost exclusively in family law, was admitted in 1994 and joined the Independent Bar in 2022. She is also an accredited mediator.

Dunlop was admitted in 2022 and, last year, was appointed executive managing prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and she sits on the ODPP’s executive team.

Billington was admitted in 2004 and joined the Independent Bar in 2015. He practises in the areas of environmental law, native title and Aboriginal heritage law, general administrative law, and criminal assets confiscation.

Speaking about the new silks, Kourakis CJ said: “The appointment of senior counsel is a significant event for the successful applicants, for the legal profession and the South Australian community.

“Senior counsel are leaders of the profession who adhere to the highest standards of legal excellence and integrity. The Chief Justice congratulates the senior counsel announced today.

“They have earned this recognition through the diligent performance of their duties to the courts and their clients.”
