Perth-based dispute resolution lawyer Nathan Landis (pictured) is the new Australian president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Ciarb), which facilitates training, accreditation, and practice of private dispute resolution. He is the first West Australian to be elected to the position.

Landis was formerly an associate to the Honourable former justice John Dowsett AM of the Federal Court, has worked at Mallesons Stephen Jaques (now King & Wood Mallesons) and DLA Piper in the Middle East, and was a foundation member of Clifford Chance’s Perth office when the firm launched in Australia in 2011.

He has also worked at global litigation funder IMF Bentham (now Omni Bridgeway), is a member of the Independent Bar, and currently serves as a legal officer in the Australian Army Reserve.

Speaking about the appointment, West Australian Attorney-General John Quigley said: “I congratulate Mr Landis on his election to the position of president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Australian branch. As the first Western Australian elected to the role, Mr Landis brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Ciarb.”

“I am confident that Mr Landis will be a valuable addition to the CIARB as well as a strong voice in advocating for and promoting the experience of Australian practitioners in the international dispute resolution market.”

Ciarb global president-elect, Professor Dr Mohamed Abdel Wahab, noted: “I am very pleased to see Mr Landis being elected as president of the Australia branch of the Ciarb.”

“Having known Mr Landis for years, I am confident that he will bring much value to the position and will build on the great work done by his predecessors. As an arbitrator, barrister, and a former senior investment manager at a leading third-party funder, and having lived abroad and travelled to many jurisdictions, Mr Landis will no doubt bring a welcomed international perspective and will lead the Australia branch to new heights and achievements.”

“I wish him and the Australia branch all the very best.”

Landis said: “With a global economy in transition, private dispute resolution is assuming greater importance as a mechanism for resolving cross-border disputes.”

“The Asia-Pacific region is seeing a range of these types of disputes emerging, including in non-traditional industries and sectors. Over the next few months, you will see us return to a pre-COVID tempo of engagement as we roll out a range of opportunities for members to improve their knowledge and gain globally recognised Ciarb qualifications.”

“We will also be announcing other initiatives that will benefit members and the various communities we serve.”

“I am honoured to be elected and see this as an opportunity to further promote and advocate for the expertise and experience of Australia’s dispute resolution practitioners in the cross-border dispute resolution market.”
