The Governor of Queensland has approved the appointment of 14 new King’s counsel in the Sunshine State, following recommendations from the state’s Chief Justice.
Late last week, Bar Association of Queensland president Damien O’Brien KC announced that Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, had approved the appointment by letters patent of 14 barristers to the designation of King’s counsel.
The appointments were made, Mr O’Brien detailed, on the recommendation of the Honourable Helen Bowskill, Chief Justice of Queensland.
“On behalf of the association, I congratulate our new silks on their appointment,” she wrote to members.
The appointments follow the naming of 23 new senior counsel in Victoria and two new SCs in the ACT, both in early November, and the naming of 20 new SCs in NSW in early October.
As reported first by Lawyers Weekly following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, persons appointed as Queen’s counsel would automatically become King’s counsel. The aforementioned appointments in Queensland thus have the designation KC.
