The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Australia has announced that it has elected a new president.
CIArb Australia announced last week that it had elected Caroline Kenny QC as president, replacing outgoing president Albert Monichino QC.
She chaired the CIArb Australia education committee in 2016, co-ordinating a partnership between CIArb and the Federal Court of Australia to develop a nationwide seminar program promoting international arbitration.
“I am honoured to be elected and see this as an opportunity to further promote and advocate Australia’s position in the growing cross-border dispute resolution market,” Ms Kenny said.
“This is an exciting time to lead CIArb Australia and I look forward to working with my fellow councillors and the CEO to promote the benefits of international arbitration and Australia as a business dispute resolution destination.”
International arbitrator and University of Melbourne chancellor Allan Myers AC QC said Ms Kenny is an ideal leader for CIArb Australia.
“I am very pleased about Caroline’s appointment,” he said.
“We worked together on major commercial matters where she demonstrated a clear intellect and capacity for hard work. She has the personal and professional qualities to lead such a distinguished association.”
Law Council of Australia president Fiona McLeod SC also endorsed Ms Kelly, especially as a female leader in arbitration.
“I’ve known Caroline for many years and I am delighted she has been elected president,” Ms McLeod said.
“It is a welcome development and an inspirational choice for women in the Australian arbitration profession.”
Sydney is due to play host to two major international arbitration conferences: the International Bar Association’s Annual Conference in October and the International Council for Commercial Arbitration Congress in 2018, which is widely recognised as the most important international arbitration conference, according to CIArb Australia.
