NSW appoints new Crown Advocate
NSW Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton announced the appointment of Dr David Kell as the state’s new Crown Advocate earlier this week.

Dr Kell began serving as Crown Advocate yesterday, following the appointment of the previous Crown Advocate, the Honourable Justice Natalie Adams SC, to the Supreme Court in April 2016.
“Dr Kell is an outstanding lawyer with many years' experience in law, including 15 years at the NSW bar,” Ms Upton said.
“His appointment as Crown Advocate follows his exemplary work as acting Crown Advocate in 2016, and his expertise will greatly benefit the NSW justice system.”
Dr Kell spent three years working for a major commercial law firm and one year as an associate to the now retired High Court judge Michael McHugh, before joining the bar in 1999.
He has worked in administrative, criminal, constitutional and commercial law, appearing in many state and federal courts and tribunals, including the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of New South Wales, as well as the Mental Health Review Tribunal and the Judicial Commission.
He has been the counsel assisting the Special Commission of Inquiry into certain child sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
Dr Kell holds a PhD (law) from the University of Oxford. He has also authored books and articles on a wide range of legal topics.
