New Chief Justice for NT Supreme Court announced
Law Society Northern Territory has welcomed the announcement of Michael Grant QC, incumbent Northern Territory Solicitor-General and first Territory-born silk, as the replacement for outgoing Chief Justice Trevor Riley.

Law Society Northern Territory applauded the news that the Solicitor-General will be the next Chief Justice of the NT Supreme Court, describing Mr Grant’s future appointment as a “historical and watershed moment for the court, the legal profession and the Northern Territory community”.
“Mr Grant is an exemplary appointment to the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory and to the extremely important position of Chief Justice,” Mr Liveris said.
“[He] was the first Territory-born practitioner to be appointed as Queen's Counsel and he is widely known and respected throughout the community as an advocate of the highest order. His wealth of experience across many roles will be an outstanding asset to the court.”
Mr Grant was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2006 and took on the position of NT Solicitor-General in 2007. Prior to his appointment he practised at the bar as a member of the William Forster Chambers from 1999.
“The society is confident that as Chief Justice, Mr Grant will, as the Attorney-General has said, consolidate the already well-established reputation of the court,” Mr Liveris said.
Mr Grant will replace Chief Justice Riley on 5 July.
