Clifford Chance makes first Australian partner promotion
A Perth-based lawyer is the first internal candidate to be promoted to the Clifford Chance Australian partnership since the firm arrived in the country three years ago.

Project finance lawyer Philip Sealey (pictured) is one of 21 new appointments to the firm’s global partnership. He is the first Australian lawyer to be promoted to partner since the firm opened in Perth and Sydney in 2011.
The appointments will take effect from 1 May 2014.
Sealey takes the total number of partners in Australia to 17.
Clifford Chance’s Perth managing partner Michael Lishman commented: “While we have relocated two partners ... and made two significant lateral hires in Dave Poddar and Paul Lingard, it has always been important to develop our own internal candidates for the partnership, and I hope that Philip is the first of many.”
Energy & resources partner Paul Lingard defected to Clifford Chance from King & Wood Mallesons in February; while Dave Poddar, whom Lawyers Weekly exclusively revealed left Allen & Overy last year under a cloud, joined the partnership of Clifford Chance in January 2013.
Yesterday (23 April) a leading consultant told Lawyers Weekly that it was getting tougher to be promoted to partner as more firms looked to rivals instead of their own ranks when appointing to their partnership.
