HWL raids Thomsons’ partnership
Thomsons has dropped another two corporate partners, bringing the tally of defections from the firm to four in just over a month.

Franchising partner Sean O’Donnell (pictured) has joined HWL Ebsworth’s Norwest office in Sydney along with former Thomsons colleague and information and communications technology (ICT) specialist Brendon Noney.
O’Donnell is also a national board member and director of the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) and is the current President of the NSW/ACT chapter of the FCA.
Noney has advised ICT clients on contractual arrangements with data centres, privacy, cross-border data flow and disclosure issues and intellectual property relating to ICT.
Lawyers Weekly reported last week that Thomsons had also lost dispute resolution specialist Craig Powell to HWL.
The HWL appointments follow the departure of Thomsons property and projects partner Ron Eames, whojoined Holding Redlich in Brisbane in January.
Thomsons had, however, picked up two heavyweight lawyers early last year: banking and finance partner Michael Barrett, known for being an extremely tough and aggressive litigator, and the former head of national leisure and entertainment at Clayton Utz, Tony Rein.
HWL Ebsworth has 160 partners and 357 other legal professionals across its Australian offices.
