Lawyer to stand trial on helping client avoid tax

A lawyer has been committed to stand trial on four counts of trying to help music entrepreneur Glenn Wheatley avoid paying tax of hundreds of thousands of dollars, AAP report today.

Wheatley told the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week the lawyer advised him to send his money offshore to avoid declaring it in Australia. The lawyer was said to have arranged for him to meet Philip Egglishaw, whom he understood was a Swiss banker, who could arrange sending his money overseas

Magistrate Peter Couzens ruled on Thursday he was satisfied there was enough evidence for a jury to convict the lawyer, whose name is suppressed, on four tax fraud charges.

The lawyer - whose name is suppressed - is charged with three counts of being knowingly concerned or a party to Wheatley's defrauding of the Commonwealth.
