Kroll has strengthened its regional investigations capability with the appointment of Maurice Burke as managing director of its investigations, diligence, and compliance team.

Burke brings more than 28 years of legal experience to his new role, where he will use his legal background to advise Kroll clients in combating fraud, corruption and weak compliance, as well as assist across sensitive investigations, according to Kroll.

He was most recently Asia head of investigations and head of litigation and regulatory at global law firm DLA Piper Singapore. Prior to this, he was a partner at Hogan Lovells and Herbert Smith Freehills, where he led dispute resolution and regulatory practices across south-east Asia.

Burke will be based in Brisbane and will work alongside Kroll teams in Australia, China, India, Japan, and the ASEAN region to enhance the firm’s strategic investigations capability and help clients navigate complex regulatory and compliance challenges.

“Given our combined skills and experience, Kroll is uniquely positioned to guide clients to meet their risk imperatives. I very much look forward to working with the dynamic and experienced Kroll team in the region,” he said.

Burke has extensive experience in cross-border regulatory issues, having worked extensively with government agencies, legal teams, and corporate managers to navigate sensitive investigations and deal with enforcement action. His expertise in investigation planning, crisis response and compliance advisory will further enhance Kroll’s ability to support clients in mitigating risk and resolving critical operational challenges, according to Cem Ozturk, Kroll’s APAC regional managing director and co-head for investigations, diligence and compliance team.

“Kroll has an unrivalled reputation for helping clients navigate high-risk situations and for delivering nuanced support on many of Asia’s highest-profile matters,” he said.

“Our clients know that the region’s developing markets offer immense opportunities, but can also offer immense risks: fraud, corruption, political risks, and weak compliance standards. Maurice’s steady presence and lateral approach to investigations and remediation add greatly to our capability in these environments.”

Investigations, diligence and compliance APAC regional managing director and co-head Tarun Bhatia said: “Maurice Burke is a known quantity here in the subcontinent and across the region. His ability to effectively assist Indian clients, as well as Indonesian, Vietnamese, Japanese and other client groups, enhances our ability to assist multinationals from around the world with their most sensitive and pressing APAC-focused investigations.”
