A former partner at international law firm Hamilton Locke, James Tannock, has joined Kain Lawyers as the firm’s new director of its Sydney office, a move the firm has described as enabling them to bolster its “national presence”.

In his new role, Tannock will work with fellow directors David Mitchell, Nick Slack, and Brendan Wykes in Sydney.

The transaction firm shared that Tannock has extensive experience navigating complex mergers and acquisitions and structuring transactions in a wide range of sectors, including health, technology, financial services, and real estate.

Over the past year, the firm has focused on expanding its transactional capabilities, with Tannock’s appointment representing the sixth senior hire within a 12-month period.

Tannock started his legal career at Gilbert + Tobin in its Sydney office before relocating to London, where he spent six years working in the mergers and acquisitions teams for US firms Willkie Farr & Gallagher and Winston & Strawn.

John Kain, the managing director at Kain Lawyers, expressed that Tannock’s extensive domestic and international experience would enhance the firm’s depth and skill set.

“We are proud to welcome James to our national team of 70 professionals. His experience in Australian and offshore markets will add further depth to our growing private equity practice. Our singular focus on mid-market transactions continues to set us apart in the market and allow us to attract lawyers of James’ calibre,” Kain said.

This news follows after the transaction firm bolstered its M&A capabilities with the appointment of a director and special counsel in early September, strengthened its presence in Melbourne with a new office and a strategic senior appointment from PwC Australia’s legal business in July, the appointment of three directors in March, which saw the firm’s leadership team increase by 20 per cent. One of these directors was Jeremy Collins, who is Melbourne-based and will join Nick Brown at the firm’s new office.
