Former KPMG Law partner Cath Debreceny has been appointed director of Kain Lawyers’ mergers and acquisition team alongside new special counsel Laura Murphy. Both will be based in Melbourne.

Managing director John Kain said the firm was thrilled to welcome Debreceny and Murphy, noting their extensive skill sets would strengthen the firm’s transactional offering.

“Kain has benefited once again from the high calibre of lawyers leaving the big four after they retreat from legal services,” he said.

“We are thrilled to add Cath to the Melbourne team, where, alongside Nick Brown, we have quickly put together an outstanding team focused directly on our core expertise of mid-market transactions.”

Debreceny has 25 years of national and international experience and specialises in founder exits, inbound multinational acquisitions, and acquisitions and disposals for Australian corporates.

She has advised on deals across pharmaceutical, health, childcare, civil construction, industrial, and technology sectors.

Prior to KPMG, Debreceny worked with Maddocks, King & Wood Mallesons, and New York firm Kirkland and Ellis LLP.

Murphy, who also specialises in mid-market transactions, has acted for founders and owners, multinational groups, privately held Australian companies, and listed companies.

“We are really excited to be able to offer this quality team to our Melbourne clients,” Kain said.

“Their expertise will help to further cement our position as Australia’s go-to mid-market transaction specialists.”
