Coutts Lawyers and Conveyancers – which won the Diversity Law Firm of the Year category at the 2021 Women in Law Awards – has appointed Carolyn Shiels from Shiels Lawyers as a new special counsel.

Shiels joins the firm following seven years of independent practice and brings nearly three decades of experience as a criminal prosecution lawyer.

Speaking about the hire, Coutts managing partner Adriana Care said: “Coutts is very excited to have Carolyn join us, she brings so much depth and experience to the team. She is a well-known and highly respected local of the Wollondilly and MacArthur regions, and a leader in the local industry.”

Firm partner Luisa Gaetani said: “Carolyn is a highly experienced and well-regarded lawyer in the south-west Sydney region. She’s got the knowledge and experience to help us expand our criminal practice as part of Coutts, helping us to support the local community, no matter the situation they find themselves in.”

Shiels said: “Joining Coutts was essentially a ‘no-brainer’.”

“Having had firsthand experience at the manner in which they work, I’ve had a bit of a soft spot for Coutts over the years.

“I look forward to sharing experience and enjoying being a part of a team like Coutts. Being able to practice within Coutts, who are a full-service agency and provide a wide range of legal services, means that clients will be able to work with us across all their legal needs.”

Coutts has offices in Camden, Campbelltown, Tahmoor, Wollongong, Sydney CBD, Parramatta, and Newcastle in NSW.
