The board of the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW/ACT) Limited (ALS) has named Kamilaroi and Ngunnawal man Jason Allan (pictured) as its new chairperson.

Mr Allan has been an ALS director since 2012 and brings – ALS said in a statement – more than 25 years of experience working to benefit communities through federal, state, and local government agencies.

He has, the statement went on, served as chief executive of the Walhallow Local Aboriginal Land Council since 2008, is a Councillor on the Liverpool Plains Shire Council, and has previously worked with ATSIC and Aboriginal Hostels Canberra.

He was elected on Friday, 25 August at Tweed Heads, following the resignation of former chairperson Mark Davies.

Mr Davies remains an ALS member.

Speaking about his new role, Mr Allan said: “I look forward to continuing the fight for social justice and equity as Chairperson of Australia’s oldest Aboriginal Legal Service.”

On behalf of the board and ALS community, Mr Allan extended his thanks to Mr Davies for his commitment and contributions over the past three years as chairperson and five years as an ALS director.
