Jeremy Marel, who is “best known” for acting in the landmark defamation case for actor Geoffrey Rush against the publishers of the Daily Telegraph and who has also acted for Australian Jewish News in proceedings brought by Rabbi Feldman, and also prominent plastic surgeon Dr Warwick Nettle, has joined Company (Giles).

Bronte Callaghan also joins from Kennedys as an associate. She is, the firm noted in a statement, a “highly experienced and skilled litigator” who has acted on behalf of international banker Peter Schiff in his successful defamation action against 60 Minutes and investigative journalist Nick McKenzie.

The appointments of Mr Marel and Ms Callaghan from Kennedys follow that of principal Patrick George earlier this year, who was a senior partner at that global firm.

Speaking about the appointments, firm founder and principal Rebekah Giles said: “Jeremy and Bronte have proven track records of effectively ameliorating unfairly damaged reputations on behalf of a wide range of clients.”

The pair’s arrival “cements Company (Giles) as Australia’s leading reputational risk lawyers”, she proclaimed.

Mr George added: “The defamation laws that regulate communications in the digital age are complex. Clients need lawyers with specialist expertise in these laws and experience in dealing with the media, online trolls and others with malicious intent.

“They need lawyers who can act urgently and competently to protect their reputations from the viral speed and spread of publications in this digital age.”
