LAST MONTH Leigh Johns commenced appointment as chief counsel of the Office of Workplace Services, which involves leading a team of legal officers, instigates litigation and finalises prosecutions under the Workplace Relations Act 1996.
During his early career in the industrial relations division of Holding Redlich, Johns represented various unions, employee associations and individuals including senior executives.
Johns then joined Mallesons Stephen Jaques’ workplace and employee relations team where for six years he acted primarily for employers in a range of industries including manufacturing, construction, mining and financial services.
In 2005, Johns joined the partnership of Australian Business Lawyers, a firm which is retained by and has a close working relationship with NSW Business Chamber (formerly Australian Business Limited).
Immediately before joining the OWS, Johns was a director at PwC Legal in Melbourne. He is also an accredited mediator with Australian Commercial Dispute Centre Ltd, along with being a past chairman and continuing executive member of the workplace relations section of the Law Institute of Victoria, and previous vice-president and past executive member of the Industrial Relations Society of Victoria.
