4th Independent National Security Legislation Monitor appointed
Attorney-General Christian Porter has appointed a new Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM).

Grant Donaldson SC has been appointed Australia’s fourth Independent National Security Legislation Monitor (INSLM).
The INSLM independently reviews the operation, effectiveness and implications of Australia’s national security and counterterrorism laws.
The Attorney-General congratulated Mr Donaldson on his appointment and stated he will bring a wealth of legal and public policy expertise to the role.
Mr Donaldson graduated from the University of Western Australia with a bachelor of jurisprudence in 1983 and bachelor of laws in 1984. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, where he graduated with a bachelor of civil laws in 1987.
After graduating, Mr Donaldson was a partner at King and Wood Mallesons, and worked as senior assistant Crown counsel at the Crown Solicitor’s Office of Western Australia. He was called to the Bar in 1998 and then appointed senior counsel in 2004.
He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Law, and has been a visiting fellow at the Law School of the University of Western Australia since 1991.
Mr Donaldson has also held senior leadership positions in the Western Australian Bar Association and the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia.
