University of Western Australia wins ANIMAL moot

Students from the University of Western Australia won first prize in this year’s Australia and New Zealand Intervarsity Moot on Animal Law.

Law students from across Australia and New Zealand debated the issues concerning consumer law and evidence law through the lenses of animal welfare at the University of Melbourne. Seventeen teams from across both countries took part in the event.

Director of The Animal Law Institute and co-founder of the Australia and New Zealand Intervarsity Moot on Animal Law (ANIMAL) Aimee Mundt said: “Animal law is emerging in the field of law both in Australia and internationally.

“As the only animal law moot currently running in Australia and New Zealand, ANIMAL offers the next generation of lawyers an opportunity to learn about this specialised area of practice, network with leaders and develop important client advocacy skills.”

Genevieve Rose and Andrew McDade of the University of Western Australia won this years’ event, followed by Pavan Swamy and Emma Genovese from Deakin University. The Best Speaker Award went to Gatwiri M’mbijiwe of University of Western Australia.

The topic of this years’ ANIMAL problem was drawn from key issues that have been receiving significant amounts of public and media attention in recent years.
