She said she was “particularly driven to work on behalf of individuals following the recent disclosures of wrongdoing” in the Hayne Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Financial Services Industry.
“I was attracted to the campaigns launched by the firm in response to the royal commission and its long history of holding corporate Australia to account,” Ms Pelka-Caven said.
“I am excited to be part of a dynamic and growing class action practice at Slater and Gordon. I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the team and look forward to delivering great outcomes for the many clients that the firm represents”.
Slaters head of class actions Ben Hardwick said the appointment further broadened the wealth and depth of experience within the team.
“We look forward to Emma joining our leadership team and sharing her diverse and varied career experience and helping us to grow our market leading position,” he said.
In the early stages of her career, Ms Pelka-Caven worked as a paralegal at Slater and Gordon on cases against British American Tobacco and Esso for losses arising from the Longford gas plant explosion, the firm said in a statement.
She acknowledged there “is a certain synchronicity” in returning to the firm where she first started.
