Six young insurance lawyers from Sparke Helmore visited London in August to attend an immersion program with underwriters, brokers and claims teams.

The firm was the first Australian partner of the program, run by the Lloyd’s Market Association (LMA) Under 35s Claims Group.

The Sparke Helmore team, comprised of partner Wes Rose, senior associates Laura Rush, Mark Sainsbury, James Clohesy and Edward Osborne and lawyer Josie Dempster, presented to over 100 insurance professionals on key issues affecting the market.

“Our insurance group has strong ties with, and an ongoing commitment to, Lloyd’s and the London market,” said Chris Wood, Sparke Helmore’s national commercial insurance group leader.

“We are privileged to have been able to offer this special learning experience to our firm’s future leaders.”

Mr Rose said the trip was a great opportunity to delve into the issues affecting clients in the UK market.

“We work with brokers and claims professionals in the London market regularly, so it was incredibly enlightening to get a deeper insight into their operations, the issues affecting their business and the wider London market,” he said.

It was also an opportunity to share knowledge from the Australian market, Ms Rush said.

“To be able to share our intelligence on developments in the Australian market and how these could potentially impact their businesses opened up such a rich dialogue,” she said.

“We discussed everything from cyber risks to developments in the building defects space, which is topical following the tragic Grenfell disaster.”

Mr Wood said Sparke Helmore was pleased to partner with LMA.

“Thank you to the LMA, we’re so proud to be the first Australian partner of this program,” he said.
