Perth-based Dr Sam Luttrell (pictured) has been named as one of 24 worldwide promotions to the Clifford Chance partnership. His appointment to the firm leadership is effective from 1 May.

Dr Luttrell obtained his PhD in law from Murdoch University, with a thesis about challenges to international commercial arbitration.

Other regional promotions to the Clifford Chance partnership include Lena Ng in Singapore, Natsuko Sugihara in Tokyo, along with David Tsai and Terry Yang in Hong Kong.

Clifford Chance managing partner, Matthew Layton, congratulated the group on their promotion.

“I am delighted to welcome them to the partnership and look forward to working alongside them as their careers go from strength to strength,” Mr Layton said.

Geraint Hughes, Clifford Chance managing partner for the Asia-Pacific, added that the promotion of five partners in the region out of 24 globally demonstrated the firm’s continued investment in key markets in the region.

“The appointments further strengthen our offering in key areas including: complex financial markets regulations and products, cross-border M&A and international arbitration. The entire team has huge belief and optimism about the contribution these professionals will make to our clients and our practice,” Mr Hughes said.

“Our five new partners reflect the ambition of our clients and our firm in Asia-Pacific, a core region in our global strategy. I am particularly proud to have seen at first hand a number of these partners progress to partnership from being trainees and young lawyers in our firm,” he said.

Dr Luttrell has worked as counsel for Clifford Chance’s litigation and dispute resolution practice for more than three years. He joined the firm from the Paris office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in 2013, and specialises in international arbitration, focusing on disputes in the energy and resources sectors.

Dr Luttrell’s work includes commercial arbitration (projects, joint ventures, commodities) and investor-state arbitration (claims under trade and investment treaties).
