A YOUNG Commonwealth DPP crushed her all male opposition in last week’s Golden Gavel Public Speaking Competition in her speech entitled ‘I’m to sexy for my shirt — dressing for Court the Justice Young way, or why cleavage is out and burkas are in’.
The NSW Young Lawyers’ Annual Golden Gavel Public Speaking Competition aimed to give “some brave lawyer contestants the opportunity to speak on a topic given to them only 24 hours earlier in front of a crowd of more than 500 of their peers”, president of NSW Young Lawyer Susannah Maclaran said.
“The Golden Gavel Competition has given aspiring young lawyers the opportunity to attain heady heights of rhetorical fame, or destroy their legal career — sometimes both — in just a few short minutes,” said Maclaran.
“The speeches were of an outstanding quality and in what is becoming a tradition, one brave soul resorted to an onstage change of costume in their effort to carry the day.”
The Golden Gavel gave Ralphed Notely of Deacons the chance to give out his mobile phone number in an effort to find love from amongst over 500 peers as he covered his topic ‘Law Society NO 1 of 2007: Rules for dating clients, opposing counsel and office romances’.
Dibbs Abbott Stillman’s Tim Gordon was a close contender to winner Gul in his given topic ‘If Russell Crowe was my firm’s Master and Commander’.
“Golden Gavel has been a long-standing highlight of the legal calendar and is the crowning jewel of Law Week, held between 27 March and 2 April 2006. Law Week is a national event held each year to promote community awareness of the legal system and the legal profession, as well as facilitating improving access to the courts and other legal services,” said Maclaran.
