NEW ANIMAL welfare laws that will enable the government to respond to serious incidents of animal cruelty have been introduced into the ACT Legislative Assembly.

The Territory’s Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said the amendments to the Animal Welfare Act 1992 (ACT) will see reckless conduct causing serious harm or death to an animal become a serious offence.

“This amendment is supported by the RSPCA and the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee,” Stanhope said. “It recognises and distinguishes reckless and negligent conduct that causes serious harm or death to an animal as a serious offence and provides for heavy fines or imprisonment for up to two years.
