Gray (pictured) specialises in advising local and off-shore fund managers on matters such as new business establishment, funds management M&A and investment funds product structuring.

Prior to joining HDY, Gray was a tax consultant at KPMG.

Lawyers Weekly contacted K&L Gates, which has declined to comment on the matter.

Gray’s appointment follows a string of lateral hires by K&L over the past six months. In October, the firm poached four partners from rival firms: Perth-based energy & resources partner Amber Stanton from Squire Sanders, Sydney-based labour & employment partner Christa Lenard from Clayton Utz, Sydney-based tax partner Betsy Ann Howe from Sparke Helmore and Melbourne-based finance partner Alan Maclean from HWL Ebsworth.

K&L also lured the general counsel of Gryphon Minerals Ltd Alex Eastwood back to private practice in September.

The US-based global firm also lost high-level lawyers in 2013, including Sydney-based litigation partner Greg Lewis, who joined HWL Ebsworth in August, and construction partner Nathan Abbott, who moved to Colin Biggers & Paisley for the chance to work at a firm where his practice area was a key priority.
