ALLENS ARTHUR Robinson and Mallesons Stephen Jaques were equal first in this year’s Asialaw Leading Lawyers survey for local firms in Australia, while Freehills and Clayton Utz shared third position.

The survey aimed to provide a list of the most admired individual lawyers in the Asia-Pacific region from 21 practice areas in 16 jurisdictions. Over 14,000 people responded, including corporate counsel, executives and lawyers at scores of law firms spanning 30 countries.

Twelve leading Australian lawyers were chosen in both Allens and Mallesons, with Freehills and Clayton Utz having eight of their number recognised. Both Mallesons (Hong Kong) and Allens had an additional lawyer recognised in a foreign office.

Of the 685 lawyers listed in the region, 68 were from Australian firms — 37 from Sydney and 25 from Melbourne.

Three top lawyers come from Mallesons’ information technology, telecommunications and media practice group, another three from the capital markets and corporate finance division. Unfortunately for one of their partners at the firm, his name was pulled from the list after an administrative error had included him mistakenly.

Clayton Utz’s intellectual property and information technology divisions were both rewarded with four partners each being named as Leading Lawyers

Allens Arthur Robinson and Freehills were unavailable for comment.
