The LSMUL is part of a series of reforms introduced by the Attorney-General’s Department to enhance the management and delivery of legal services across Commonwealth departments. It came into effect on 1 June 2012 and gives agencies a pre-approved list of law firms from which they may procure legal services.

King & Wood Mallesons have pre-qualified to provide legal services to the Commonwealth in the areas of government and administrative law, corporate and commercial law, and dispute resolution and litigation.

DLA Piper was appointed to all four categories of the LSMUL, which will be managed by the Office of Legal Services Coordination in the Attorney-General's Department. 

Caroline Atkins, Managing Partner of the firm's Canberra office, said the LSMUL is a significant structural change to the public sector legal market.

Minter Ellison has also been appointed to all panels under the LSMUL. Paul McGinness, managing partner of the firm's Canberra office, who is responsible for overseeing all of its Federal Government client relationships, said Minter Ellison has been advising Commonwealth agencies for over 40 years.

"We have more Canberra lawyers recognised in Best Lawyers 2012 than any other law firm… We have in place a range of processes for managing relationships with our existing Commonwealth Government clients,” McGinness said.

"Our approach is to allocate a partner to be responsible for each individual client relationship, ensure our team understands the client's business, and carefully manage special reporting and invoicing requirements,” he said.
