THE NATION’S capital will have a new Human Rights Commission (HRC) in November, the Territory’s Attorney-General, Simon Corbell, said last week.
To be lead by specialist commissioners, the HRC will deal with complaints about discrimination, health services, disability services, services for older people, and services for children and young people.
The HRC will also be involved in facilitating service improvement and developing awareness in government and the community of human rights.
“The new structure will result in the delivery of superior services to the community and to government — both in oversight and advocacy terms, and also by actively promoting improvements in the delivery of human services,” Corbell said.
“Conciliation will be kept separate from the process of considering complaints by having it carried out by trained staff of the Commission or by specialist consultants engaged by the Commission where appropriate. The community expects, and deserves, high quality services.
“The decision to alter the structure of the Commission is consistent with a number of decisions made in this year’s budget to reduce expenditure on optional overhead expenses and to streamline administrative processes,” he said.
