LIV campaign boosts work for members

The Law Institute of Victoria handed its members an opportunity for new work today after it urged overseas students to get legal advice before they embark on study in Australia.

LIV president Danny Barlow says overseas students are vulnerable to exploitation, labelling some migration agents “unscrupulous”.

The LIV represents lawyers who are qualified migration agents. Lawyers such as this are better placed to identify and advise on the legal issues likely to arise, Barlow said.

In a media release, Barlow said: “You are dealing with students and their families who may not be adept in English or Australian laws. Whether it is a visa application or seeking to change their visa status, legal advice is highly recommended,” he said.

“The goal should be to give the best possible protection to overseas students seeking the appropriate visas to come to our country and when renewing their visas, and we believe that legal practitioners are best qualified, and better supervised, to do this,” he said.

The Senate Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Committee is currently inquiring into the welfare of international students. The LIV is preparing a submission to this inquiry.
