THE large law firms are affirming a sense of “mutuality and professional stewardship” in the face of “the harshest economic environment in more than 30 years” rather than opting for commercial and competitive rivalry, Allens Arthur Robinson chief executive partner wrote in an opinion article published in The Australian Financial Review.

On the eve of the Annual Managing Partners’ forum today, Allens’ top man Michael Rose said the Chief Justice of NSW, James Spigelman, would see a confirmation in his assertion that the economic crisis would bring professional restraint, fidelity and honesty to resume its salience over “the pursuit of commercial gain at the core of legal practice”.

Rose said the difficult times have reminded some clients of the benefits of close professional relationships with their external lawyers, while others have undervalued values-based elements of the relationship via “aggressive panel and procurement arrangements”.
