FOR THE 11th year running, Deacons welcomed the Chinese New Year last weeklikening the traits of this year’s celebrated animal to its own approach to legal practice.
“Here at Deacons, we like to think of ourselves as being hardworking and motivated,” he said.
“But … hard work and motivation don’t count for much if they aren’t focussed on a goal, and we strive to be the intelligent alternative law firm.”
Deacons partner and chairman of the Australia China Business Council, Kevin Hobgood-Brown, entertained the audience with examples of notable “pigs” and explained why the year could be of particular significance to Australia.
“Pig years have always been significant for Australia with mixed results”, he said, using the example of Pavlova and Vegemite.
“Pig years have been times of economic growth, with the Dow Jones industrial average being positive in every Year of the Pig.”
Special guests included Keith Kirkham from the US Consulate, Liu Shuzhen, from the China Council for Promotion of International Trade, and Stephen Deady and Rachel Wilson from the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade.
