SYDNEY TURNED dark on Saturday night, when businesses and individuals together switched off their lights for one hour. Law firms were among those who got involved in the energy saving initiative Earth Hour.
According to statistics provided by Earth Hour organisers, 69 per cent of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy production (CSIRO). As well, October 2006 was by far the hottest October on record for New South Wales, with the statewide average maximum temperature more than 3.2 degrees above the historical average of 24.4 degrees (records since 1950) (Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology).
By 2100, up to 15,000 Australians could die every year from heat-related illnesses and the dengue transmission zone could reach as far south as Brisbane and Sydney if we continue to allow (greenhouse gas) emissions to increase (Australian Medical Association).
