An additional 54 members have been appointed to the AAT, further to the government’s commitment to appoint at least 75 additional members to the AAT to address the existing backlog of cases, such as in the migration and refugee division.

The news follows the government’s naming of 39 additional members to the AAT back in mid-September and brings the total membership of the AAT to 358 members, with 209 full-time and 149 part-time members.

The additional members will be appointed for a fixed term of two years, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus noted in a statement, with the majority assigned to the migration and refugee division and several members being assigned to the National Disability Insurance Scheme division and the social services and child support division.

Speaking about the new members, A-G Dreyfus said: “Under the previous government, backlogs and delays in the AAT were allowed to grow exponentially. This has come at a very real cost to the tens of thousands of people who rely on the AAT each year to independently review government decisions that have major and sometimes life-altering impacts on their lives.”

“On behalf of the government, I congratulate the members on their appointments.”

The new members will commence between 9 October 2023 and 5 February 2024. All members appointed through this process will transition to the new administrative review body, the Administrative Review Tribunal, upon its commencement, for the remainder of their term.

The new members are Dr Dawn Barker, Kay Bell, Alicia Bills, Melissa Bray, Michael Brereton, Patrick Burgess, Mary-Ann Cooper, Clyde Cosentino, Dr Kevin Dodd, Suseela Durvasula, Jessica Edis, Jennifer Ermert, Amy Faram, Garry Fitzgerald, Patrick Francis, Helen Glass, Amanda Goodier, Benjamin Goulding, John Paul Guemy, Melissa Haag, Athena Harris Ingall, Noelle Hossen, Denny Hughes, Adam Johnson, Dr Rachelle Johnston, Hollie Kerwin, Hee-Jung Kim, Matthew King, John Kotsifas, Joshua Le Vay, Gary Ledson, Rebecca Lee, Anastasis Liveris, Lisa Maree Lo Piccolo, Ben Lumsdaine, Sophie Manera, Shane Marshall, Mary Mathew, Rosemary Mathlin, Janette McCahon, Professor Robert McLaughlin, Stefanie Memmott, Belinda Mericourt, Rebecca Mikhail, Sydelle Muling, Siran Nyabally, Linda Pearson, Alison Ryan, Frances Simmons, Catherine Wall, Professor Gregory Weeks, Carolyn Wilson, Sue Zelinka, and Sophia Ziebell-Barnes.
