Only one state or territory in Australia has not yet decriminalised abortion: New South Wales. But there still remain hurdles to access to safe terminations, especially in rural areas of the country, and – with religious freedoms featuring prominently in the sociopolitical discourse – it must be considered whether new state-based laws emerging in America’s Deep South could see light in Australia.
