Mental health expert and 2010 Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry will be attending legal lunches next month in Victoria and NSW.

McGorry will address the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) President's Leadership Lunch on Friday (1 July), where he will discuss the effect of long-term detention on the mental health of asylum seekers.

Two weeks after that, on Thursday 13 July, McGorry will be speaking at a Law Society of NSW luncheon on how to deal with mental health and depression during one's professional career in the workplace.

McGorry is the director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation and the executive director of Orygen Youth Health.

McGorry, who does not shy away from providing strong commentary on a range of views, is credited as being one the major influences on the Federal Government's $2.2 billion spending package over five years on mental health reform, announced in May's budget.

McGorry is also a supporter of an Australian republic and has criticised detention centres.
