Henry Davis York partner John Currie today (30 June) steps down from his role as partner to take up a part-time role as a consultant to the firm.
Spending his last day as a partner "catching up" and "dealing with difficult client issues", Currie will stay on with the firm as a consultant on a four-day-per-fortnight basis.
"Essentially what I'm doing as a consultant is primarily being available with my expertise and experience to help the other partners and the younger lawyers when they come across a curly issue, but also to keep up to speed on regulatory developments both here in Australia and overseas," Currie told Lawyers Weekly.
Taking a break from his lecturing duties at the University of Sydney as he gets used to his new schedule - which includes rowing twice a week - Currie will keep busy with his commitments to HDY as well as his involvement with The Guardianship Tribunal and The Administrative Decisions Tribunal.
"I kept hearing from other people who've retired that you actually work harder once you retire," said Currie, discussing his already busy schedule.
Listing his work acting for the Sydney Futures Exchange in its growth phase from the mid-1980s to the early 2000s as a career highlight, Currie also reflected on the development of HDY, which he has seen grow from just 15 partners to 57 during his tenure at the firm.
