The Law Council of Australia (LCA) has developed a new strategy to investigate and address the high attrition rates of female lawyers in the legal profession and to increase their representation within senior ranks.

The LCA's new Strategic Framework for the Recruitment and Retention of Women Lawyers aims to reduce the attrition rate through a range of initiatives including a national attrition study and the development of a diversity policy.

Through the new framework, the LCA hopes to obtain empirical data to test the anecdotal evidence of reasons for the attrition.

"The Law Council is concerned by the high attrition rates of women lawyers and believes the retention of women lawyers is a matter of national importance that must be addressed in the legal profession," said LCA president Alexander Ward.

"Increasing numbers of women are entering the legal profession yet positions of leadership continue to be male-dominated."
