President of the Law Council of Australia (LCA) Alexander Ward has called for the establishment of a UK chapter in the LCA's international law section (ILS) to help bring together Australian lawyers in London.

Hosting a reception for Australian lawyers at Australia House in London this week, Ward highlighted some of the key policy initiatives of the LCA and the progress of the LCA's international strategy.

The reception, which was attended by over 150 UK-based lawyers, was aimed at reconnecting Australian lawyers working in London.

"The purpose of this chapter would be to allow expat Australian lawyers to stay in touch with each other and the Law Council's work," Ward said.

"It would also provide an opportunity for UK-based lawyers to filter back issues of concern to the Australian profession and allow the Law Council and its representatives to stay in touch with UK-based lawyers."

The LCA also plans to introduce a Thailand chapter to the ILS, developed by Australian lawyers practising in Thailand.

"The establishment of a Thailand chapter will provide an opportunity for Thailand-based lawyers to build a strong local network while at the same time stay connected to the Australian legal profession," Ward said.

Continuing his international tour, which included visits to Thailand and London, Ward also went to meet the president of the Law Society of Ireland to continue discussions regarding a proposal to allow unemployed Irish law graduates to take up work placements in regional Australia.

The London reception was one of a number of planned activities developed to coincide with the mid-year International Bar Association meetings in Warsaw.
