Federal Budget 2011: Funding boost for human rights

Human rights are on the Gillard Government's agenda in the 2011-12 Federal Budget, with additional funding provided to the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

Human rights are on the Gillard Government's agenda in the 2011-12 Federal Budget, with additional funding provided to the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland today (10 May) announced that the Government will provide an additional $2.9 million over four years to the AHRC, which includes $1.6 million over four years to restore the stand-alone positions of Race and Disability Discrimination Commissioners.

The funding will also be used to establish a dedicated Age Discrimination Commissioner working within the AHRC.

"A dedicated commissioner would tackle discrimination in getting a job, applying for a promotion, enrolling at TAFE or university, applying to rent a house or using services such as banking, superannuation, insurance and government services," said McClelland in a statement.
