The Law Council of Australia (LCA) has today (13 April) backed calls by a Parliamentary committee to reverse funding cuts to the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC).

The LCA supports recommendations made by the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs References Committee for the ALRC Act to be amended to provide for a minimum of two permanent, full-time commissioners.

Noting the significant contribution made by the ALRC to federal law reform in Australia, LCA president Alexander Ward said its ability to serve that function has been undermined significantly by funding cuts of around 15 per cent in the 2010 federal budget.

"The ALRC must be given sufficient resources to perform its functions effectively," he said.

"The ALRC is a unique and valuable institution amongst Australia's allied democracies. Its capacity to contribute to law reform must not be undermined by a reduction in its funding."
