NSW's top female lawyers were celebrated on Friday night as the Women Lawyers Association of NSW announced the winners of the Women Lawyers Achievement Awards.

Anny Slater, the founder of Slaters Intellectual Property Lawyers, took out the award for the Woman Lawyer of the Year in Private Practice - an accolade to complement her award for Best Enterprise won at the Australian Business Awards

In the corporate lawyer category, Bronwyn Carr, the lead lawyer for business to business at American Express, took out the award for In-House Woman Lawyer of the Year.

Edwina MacDonald, the law reform co-ordinator of Women's Legal Services Australia and the law reform and policy solicitor at Women's Legal Services NSW, took out the award for Woman Lawyer of the Year in a Community Organsiation, while Tina Jowett - with an array of experience in Indigenous-related legal work - took out the award for Woman Lawyer Advocate of the Year.

The Up and Coming Woman Lawyer of the Year prize went to Ruth Chalmers, a criminal defence lawyer at Redfern Aboriginal Legal Service.

Justice Virginia Bell won plenty of laughs from the audience as she delivered her guest speech - relating that at one of the earliest meetings of the Women Lawyers Association of NSW she attended years ago, "under a dim, flickering light we had planned the overthrow of the male patriarchy of legal services".
