BHP BILLITON has offered positions to eight members of WMC Resources’ 12-strong in-house legal team following its recent takeover of the company.

WMC Resources general manager legal and company secretary, Peter Horton, who will stay with BHP through the transitionary period, said he was pleased with the result, which was in line with what he had expected.

“Basically, the people who had primary responsibility for a business or function that [BHP] was maintaining went across,” Horton said. BHP had already said publicly it would be unlikely to keep WMC’s fertilisers division, which foreshadowed the redundancy of Law Institute of Victoria and 2004 Australian Law Awards Young Gun of the Year, Victoria Strong. Joining her were Angela Kasjan and Stephanie Reeves.

The majority of those who were made redundant left on 1 July and Horton will finish his time with the company in August.

Kasjan has already started in a new role and Horton said Reeves and Strong were still considering their options. Horton said he was also unsure where the future would take him.

“I have had a number of approaches and I am looking at those,” he said.
