Former Federal Court judge Marcus Einfeld has announced his plans to address prison reform and mental health following his release from Silverwater jail on the weekend.

Having served a two-year prison sentence for perjury and perverting the course of justice to avoid a $77 speeding fine in 2002, Einfeld expressed his gratitude to his family and friends who supported him throughout the "worst period" of his life.

"I'm desperately sorry for letting [my family] and the community down so badly," Einfeld told reporters outside Silverwater jail.

"I've certainly learned a very painful lesson."

Subject to the recovery of his health, Einfeld said he plans to return to public work, highlighting the need for serious prison reform and to address the problems arising from mental health and depression, particularly in men.

In July 2009 Einfeld was officially struck off the roll of legal practitioners. He was also stripped of his Order of Australia and commission as Queen's Counsel.
