The Australian Government has today (31 January) announced an additional $200,000 in funding to ensure that Queenslanders affected by the floods crisis have the necessary access to legal information and advice.

Many members of the legal profession, including Legal Aid Queensland and the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, have already been working across the state to ensure that people affected by the floods can access legal assistance.

"The recent floods have left many Queensland families and businesses with legal issues relating to insurance claims, housing and tenancy issues and lost or destroyed documents that will need to be addressed," said Attorney-General Robert McClelland.

"This additional funding will help families to access early and accurate information and advice and can help prevent legal problems from becoming more complicated as people start to rebuild their lives."

McClelland said the funding will be directed at services including telephone, face-to-face and outreach legal advice for residents and fact sheets made available online regarding possible legal issues.
