The legal profession should be allowed to examine the new draft laws for national profession reform before the details are signed off by COAG, says the Law Council of Australia.
"The Law Council's directors were unanimous in the view that it is absolutely vital that the profession see and comment on the revised legislative package, including the intergovernmental agreement, before COAG signs off on the details of the reform," said LCA president Glenn Ferguson.
"As a result the Law Council has requested the legislative package be released to the profession so it can examine the details of the national regulatory scheme being advanced by the taskforce."
At the directors' meeting, the LCA considered the National Legal Profession Taskforce's Interim Report, released last month, which outlines the revised position of the taskforce following three months of extensive consultation.
The taskforce is due to present its final proposals to COAG by the end of this year. COAG has until early 2011 to sign off on the reform package.
