Chief of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) John Coates has been voted into the top job at the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

At a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Tuesday (16 November) it was decided that Coates will succeed Italian Mino Auletta as president of ICAS from 1 January 2011.

The AOC president has been a member of ICAS since 1994 and was appointed vice-president in 1995. He defeated former International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president Richard Pound for the job.

Coates is currently a member of the IOC executive board as well as the IOC's juridical, television rights and new media commissions arm.

ICAS comprises 20 international lawyers who oversee the administration, finance and rules of the sporting world's "Supreme Court", which is the last port of call for international sporting disputes.
